(Indianapolis, IN) Indiana Members Credit Union (IMCU), Central Indiana’s largest credit union, tied for First Place for the 2013 Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award for credit unions in the state of Indiana. The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program, sponsored by the Indiana Credit Union League (ICUL) and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), honors credit unions for their involvement and achievements in community projects and activities. IMCU tied for first place in the $1 billion + assets category, for the state of Indiana which was presented at the Indiana Credit Union League’s 79th Annual Convention Chairman’s Awards Banquet on Friday, September 27th, at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis.
IMCU’s entry portrayed its “People Helping People” philosophy by detailing the success of their 2012 partnership with IPS School #44, Riverside Elementary, which provided over 500 students with school uniforms, shoes and belts as well as donated 1.8 tons of food to the schools food pantry which serves approximately 40 families a month. Throughout the year, IMCU held fundraising events geared toward helping the children and families at IPS #44. Ron Collier, president and CEO of IMCU, said, “We are honored to receive such a prominent award in the credit union industry. The objective of our year-long partnership with IPS School #44 was to improve the educational and social needs of the students by providing them with the appropriate tools to be successful in their education. The support we received from our employees for this project was amazing and was the reason for the success of the campaign.”
The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award has honored credit unions for charitable work in their communities since its inception in 1987. The competition is named after credit union pioneer, Dora Maxwell, who worked with several organizations to improve the living standards of the poor and needy. Maxwell was one of the original signers of CUNA’s constitution at Estes Park, Colorado, and worked as an organizer for the movement’s trade association and held numerous volunteer positions at the local and national level. IMCU’s winning entry will advance to the national competition, where it will compete with other projects from credit unions in the same asset category ($1 billion +) nationwide. The winner will be announced at CUNA’s Governmental Affairs Conference in February 2014.
